three things thursday

1. I finally added green to my smoothie.  It tastes a little bit different and I get green flecks in my teeth, but is still palatable.  It looks like dinosaur poop, though, and had a very interesting and immediate effect to the sounds of my digestive system.  Strange.
2. I recently had a swim date with Amy, and she was kind enough to watch me flail around in the water for a few minutes to make a list of all the things I'm doing wrong.  Example A.
She filled my brain up with great drills and things to think about, and a few swims later, I'm still trying to work it all out.  However, one of the drill she gave me for extending my reach (I think that is what it is for?) seems to have already sprinkled a magical unicorn on my swim.  Wednesday mornings I do a 3x (some distance) TT swim, and yesterday morning I shaved about 4-5 seconds per 100 yards off of each effort.  Amy, I owe you a big box of cookies.

3. All this rain is leaving me sweating my brains out on the trainer more often than not.  This morning I had one of the better rides I've had, but then when I went outside for my T run, my Garmin didn't realize that I was outside and flip the GPS back on, which means that except for HR, I have no information from my run.  RUDE.  And it was raining so hard that I couldn't see the screen on my Garmin anyway, so I had to mostly go off of effort, and we all know that I've only been doing HR training for 3 weeks and definitely can't be trusted with any of this "perceived effort" crap.  Sigh.

Happy Thursday, everyone!  Are you tired of the rain washing away all the roads normally used for cycling, like me (I'm looking at you, Hains Point)?  I wish we could send it all down to Texas

  1. It's good you have a trainer as an option! I liked the rain for the first two days, but now I am kinda sick of it.

  3. I fear what Beach Drive will look like this weekend.

For greens in smoothies, I like freezing grated zucchini and adding it for extra fiber/vitamins/minerals. It makes smoothies super thick and creamy.

  4. Trainer rides this week have made me stabby. Get used to it though -- you're training for IM in the middle of blizzard season, which DC apparently has decided it likes to have :)

I want to learn this drill. I'm could use a little variation/unicorn dust in my swim.

  5. Yea for green smoothies! I was shocked that you really can't taste it! (what did I think? That everyone was lying?) It's an easy and sneaky way to work those greens in to breakfast. First breakfast anyway.
And YES, please send that rain our way!!!

  6. Mmmm, green smoothies. If you put blueberries in it, you at least can't see the poop-like color.

  7. How do you know what dinosaur poop looks like?

  8. I have yet to put green things in my smoothies. And now after hearing about how it affected you, I'm staying away.

  10. I'm ready for this rain to get out of here. It really makes commuting and exercising a bitch and makes me want to spend all night in pjs with a big batch of comfort food.

  11. i got some sprinkles this AM on my ride but it stopped as soon as it started. it may, however, ruin track tonight. i'm just not into soggy shoes like i used to be.

good job on the swim magical unicorn stuff.

  12. I recently got sick off of a juice I had made with lots of green stuff in it so I don't know how long it will be until I can't have another smoothie/juice again :-( Send some of your rain this way we are in a drought!

  13. I am soooo over this rain. I haven't even been running in it. Just depressed from always having wet hair and shoes as I go about my day.

  14. Your smoothie is a neat green! What all goes into a Katie smoothie?

That's really neat you have a friend to help you improve your swim technique. :)

    Bummer about the Garmin!

  15. People are eventually able to "perceive effort"?! Crazy talk.

I put green in my smoothies once and have never done it again. That smoothie may have been made by a Food Processor (lack of blender at the time), but I'm still judging it by that. Ew.

  16. That smoothie looks exactly like dino-poop. I like mine yummy strawnannaberry.

I think you look awesome swimming and love the cap.

I typically like running in drizzle, but not these downpours. Plus, I've been fighting a cold all week and today it one, so it was super blech. Keep trucking, regardless of garmin feedback, you did it!!

  17. It totally makes my day—no, my whole week—that my inner swim-coach-nerd could be helpful (newscast to mom and dad: paying for more than a decade of membership in a club swim team=not for nothing!). You look great, and are gonna kill the swim portion of the IM! In other news, green smoothies still scare me. Every time I almost get brave enough to try one, I chicken out and just add a salad to my next meal instead.
