three things thursday

1. I know, in theory, I cannot have lost that much fitness by taking 3 days off.  My legs and lungs disagree.  Especially on my morning rides.  Especially this morning, in 450mph winds that made me skid all over the place.  Damn you, 14th Street bridge.  DAMN YOU. Especially when this face is begging you to stay IN BED. 2. I make homemade pizza quite often - dough from scratch, and I split the batch in half and make a thin-crusted pizza and a round of breadsticks.  Last night's featured green chiles and jalapenos, and I put strips of mozzarella on the breadsticks.  YUM. 3.  Giveaway winner!  I let random.org choose.... and it's Rudi B!  Email me at katrina dot brownell at gmail dot com for your giftcard info! Happy Thursday, everyone!

how to get this life

Usually Wednesday is "wordless" for me - but not today. A few weeks ago, I got this email from a dear old friend of mine (I don't think he reads the blog - but hopefully he won't mind): "Katie, So, let me get this straight...you're all skinny & hot & bicycling & motorcycling & happy? All this while I'm fat, out of shape, stuck in a loveless relationship & miserable?  How do I get YOUR life? :) Looking good girl.  Hope all is well...." Wow, right? I know I've talked about this before, and I also know that many of us have been there.  All those words he uses to describe his life have all described my life at some point - and all at once, during a really dark time in 2009.  I remember being married, feeling trapped in a loveless relationship.  I also remember very clearly being able to see what my life would look like on the other side, when I was out of it and happy.  The problem, for me, was figuring out how to get thro

weekend in Miami: vacation report

Whew! Friday night we ate at Gloria Estefan's restaurant: Lario's On The Beach .  Amazing cuban food.  We bought drink cups at our hotel, which gave us $6 pina coladas & daiquiris for the duration of our stay (instead of the $12-$18 they were everywhere else - Miami Beach is EXPENSIVE!).   out for dinner!   my vacation purse, which I love Saturday we went parasailing, ate lunch at the delicious News Cafe , spent some time relaxing on the beach, and had dinner at maybe one of the best Italian restaurants I've ever been to, Spiga .   on our way to parasailing   view from the beach   off to dinner lava cake Sunday we went to the World Erotic Art Museum  (I tried to post only the PG pics - you know, for the kids), ate lunch at the super-zany Mango's , lazed around reading by the pool, and went to Prime 112 - an organic steakhouse with the largest portions I've ever seen.   OH MY!   the royal throne   our fancy dinner night And Monday we had more fantastic tim

random friday facts

1. I might have said this before, but I HATE SHOPPING. 2. I am afraid of flying.  Actually, I am afraid of taking off & landing.  In 2006, I was flying from Boston to DC for Labor Day weekend.  There was some hurricane going on, so we couldn't land, but instead circled for 2 hours.  Then the captain came over the loudspeaker and said something that basically went, "We have to land here and now or we won't be heavy enough to land, and it's really going to suck but you probably won't die."  The plane was rocking side-to-side almost 90ยบ.  People were screaming and puking and saying the Hail Mary and I honestly thought my ticket was up.  The worst part was, we landed at Reagan, which is surrounded by protected airspace, so the descent is really steep on a normal day.  So bad.  For about 2 years after that, I had to get pretty drunk before I would get on a plane.  I still don't like it. 3.
