week 0

Soooooo....... my 12-week half marathon training plan is going to get adjusted down to 10.  I forgot when I planned it that we'd be on vacation halfway through the first week, and I didn't anticipate taking a week off from running to try and calm my cranky piriformis  down - which, as of right now, seems to have worked.  I had a long talk with the Egyptian Magician at PT on Friday morning, and have readjusted my plan based on it.  I'm going to replace the post-long-run recovery run with a pool run for the next few weeks.  I'm going to alternate high and low mileage weeks instead of a 3-week build then step back, and I'm going take the first few weeks of speed work VERY lightly.  All the stretching/foam rolling/tennis balling seems to be calming my butt down, and I don't want to re-irritate it by cranking things up too quickly.   Now, add that to the part where I seem to have picked up the poet 's cold,  and I'm making this coming week: 0. ...

Reston New Year's Day 5K: race report

Sooo....after a week of planning, a night of partying, and less than 5 hours sleep, we got up and dressed for a 5K!   Lauren and Julie decided to join us; the rest of the house was still sleeping.  I had special technical tees printed for this race (probably the only reason we didn't cave and go back to sleep!).   We headed out to Reston, cranky and tired and more than a little punchy. We didn't pre-register for the race, so by the time we got there, registered, and had our bibs on, the runners were lined up and ready to start.  My original idea had been to try and PR this race, but a few days before I realized how bad of an idea that was for many reasons and decide to instead just enjoy it. And we're off! We jogged most of the first mile, and then stopped on and off to walk and chat with other runners.  There was a little kid singing the Mario Galaxy theme song, so we hung with him and helped him out with his singing for a while.  The race was an out-...

three things thursday

1. Back to complaining about running.  My piriformis has been pissing me off ever since the JATW10K .  My PT doesn't seem all that concerned, but after listing my body parts that are going wrong at my last appointment, he said, "Maybe you should take a day off?" to which I said, "A day off from what?"   Oh.  I see .  So, the last week of the year I ran only very easy miles, and only 12 of them.  AND I walk/ran the NYD 5K, then took the next 4 days completely off.  Effect on my piriformis?  Zip.  So I'm taking the rest of the week off (until I see the E.M. on Friday) from running and will adjust my training plan  after we talk.  It doesn't bother me any more while I am running than it does the rest of the time, and it doesn't actually bother me that much, but it's enough to give me pause.  And I'm sure running does not make it happy.  And I am determined to get to the starting line of this half marathon healthy.  So. this is not a post about running

Back in October, the poet threw me a surprise 30th birthday party, with an extra surprise for everyone - a proposal .  At the time, in that moment, I was terrified.  But we decided to discuss it, and I shared my thoughts about where we were and where we were going.  We decided that we would take two weeks to think it over and talk and be honest with our feelings and not make a decision.  At some point over those two weeks, I worked through a lot of the things I was afraid of, and said yes - but a yes that I wanted to keep to ourselves for a while, to give us time to adjust.  So we started talking about when and how to do it - the big question for every couple who has decided to make this step.  We talked about December 2012 - a date that felt safe to me, being far enough away that my “yes” could feel like a “no” for quite some time.  We talked about eloping, about sneaking off to Vegas or the Bahamas and doing it quietly, just the two of us, without a...
