It's been rainy and cool this week, the kind of weather that makes you just want to stay in bed all day. Lucky bastards.

When my entire body fell apart back in March , it took a while to for lots of physical therapists to untangle what was going on.  My sacrum had been living out of alignment for months, and the pain was coming from someone putting it back in.  My body kept trying to force it back out, so all the bones grinding together were making me pretty unhappy.   However, all that pain was just a symptom of what was actually going on, and now that I'm on the other side and have mostly figured it out, I thought it might be interesting or helpful to talk about the process of rehabilitation.   Here's what I thought I knew prior to the massage that brought my world tumbling down : I had been living with a very tight hip flexor and a very tight piriformis for months.  When I ran, almost nothing bothered me, but when I stopped, everything clamped down and it hurt to sit for long periods of time.  Fast running - like 400m repeat pace - made my hip flexor burn and lock up. ...

august: my training turned on its head

So, taking a look back... August Goals Keep riding those ridiculous hills.   Check - and I added a mountain! Don't panic about running.  Easy and long is better than speed work.   With the occasional twinge, running is actually going quite well. Maybe do some actual reading about HR training instead of just making it up along the way.   Or hire a coach so I don't have to read.... A haircut would be nice.   I cut my own hair since I couldn't find time for an appointment. Figure out race day clothes and actually train in them before race day. Ummm...good thing I still have another month until race day. DO NOT BUY A NEW BIKE.  No matter how shiny.   Check!   August was actually pretty solid.  I ran more miles than I've run since February, and I swam more yards than....since I've been recording, so at least a year and a half.  And with the exception of my naggy shin, my body is actually cooperating.  I feel like I turned a c...

three things thursday

1. The other piece of the "being coached" puzzle that I forgot to mention is nutrition.  Every day, I log my weight, resting HR, and hours of sleep.  Scientists will notice that this means I am now required to weigh myself every day, something I have never done in my life.  The first thing I noticed is that I've gained about 5lbs (muscle?  please?  yes, let's go with that ) since the last time I weighed myself which was likely last December or January because, in general, I don't give a crap about the number as long as my pants fit.  The intensity of my workouts has changed quite a bit, so I spent the first week eating like I normally did and then wondering why I was starving at 6pm and gobbling down everything I could fit in my piehole which is actually quite a bit.  This is a good way to gain 3-5lbs fairly quickly, which is what happened.  Then I freaked out at the scale (stupid bitch) and stopped eating ice cream and drinking beer and went back...
