ZOOMA Annapolis 10K: race report

Image
Finally!  A running race that is not a 5K! A few weeks ago, Kate twittered to see if anyone would like to run the ZOOMA Annapolis Half with her.  I took a look at my calendar, but after seeing that I had 100 miles on tap the day before, managed to sweet talk her into just doing the 10K with me instead.  So we signed up. I remember some friends running this race last year, and looked up some race reports to find that generally it is disgustingly hot and humid.  And after Tuesday morning's mini track workout, where it was over 84ยบ by 6am, even a 10K started to feel like it was going to be a long way.  Thankfully, the temperature dropped as the week went on.   Saturday was gorgeous but my legs were zapped after a long week of training.  I was pretty thrilled to get into the pool for a very short and easy swim and then proceed directly to brunch instead of waking up before dawn to ride in circles for 6 hours.  I was less than thrilled earlier i...

100 Miles of Nowhere: race report

Image
I don't generally like to do virtual races.  Don't get me wrong, it's fun and sometimes I need the extra oomph to get out the door, but I love the excitement of race day and would much rather wake up at 4:30am to drag myself to a start line. However, a few months ago, I read about a virtual race put on by " Fatty ."  It's called 100 Miles of Nowhere , and you can go read about the history of it if you want, but essentially, the idea is to ride 100 miles over a short course.  Why?  Because cancer is stupid, and that's where your "entry fee" goes - the profits go to LiveStrong, to help them help people fight cancer. Maybe this makes me a cranky wench, but I don't generally like to raise money to race.  I like my racing and my charitable contributions to be separate.  And how I feel about this might change someday, but for now I'd rather just donate $500 to a charity than pester my friends to help me raise $500 so I can run a race.  Th...

tofu mac & cheese

Image
I read an article on a cooking site a few months ago about healthy versions of comfort food.  I made a few of the recipes, but one that stuck was a "healthy" mac & cheese recipe.  At some point over the past month, I had the possibly brilliant idea to make it but dump some tofu in it, so it would be a protein-loaded comfort food.   So I bought roughly the ingredients I remembered, plus a container of silken tofu.   The problem with listing this as a recipe is that I didn't exactly follow one, so if you make it....good luck.  I also forgot to do several steps, but I'll include those for you. Ingredients: Bread crumbs (I used panko) 1 package spinach 1 pint milk Flour Shredded cheese Silken tofu Salt Pepper Box of pasta Instructions: 1.  Preheat oven to 450ยบ. 2. Boil water.  Pour in entire small box of pasta.  Cook pasta about 2 minutes short of fully cooked (yeah, good luck with that). 3. Pour about half of the milk in a la...

surprised yet again by a month ending...

I had actually completely forgotten that it was the end of the month until I saw another May recap posted.  That bodes well for my goals... May Goals Finish the 70.3 (more on this later).   Done & triumphant! Don't buy any more furniture. I did not buy any MORE... Spend lots of recovery time eating, drinking, swimming with the pups and relaxing.   A recovery week in Jamaica was just what the doctor ordered. May was a busy month.  Every weekend had something huge - graduation, a race, another race, and a vacation.  Looking back now, I can see how much anxiety I had about the 70.3, and now I laugh about it because I had no reason to worry that much.   Running was up and down for the month - once the 70.3 was over, I backed way off, and am still dealing with some lingering issues from my SI joint disaster injury.  This month I'll start to inch back into running again, but I'm going to keep it on the easy side for sure.  I had a soli...
